Syracuse (8-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) remained at No. 14 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll after splitting a pair of games in Berkeley, California last weekend. The Orange defeated Cal, 4-3, in double-overtime on Friday before losing to No. 16 Stanford the next day, 3-2.
Against the Bears, freshman Charlotte de Vries had a hat trick to bring her season total to 12 goals, five away from the SU record for goals by a freshman currently held by Martu Loncarica. de Vries has already passed Roos Weers’ 11 from last year, which was the highest on SU, with six games left in the regular season.
But the Orange couldn’t extend its winning streak to four games against the Cardinal, which would’ve been their longest since starting the 2017 campaign 7-0. Syracuse sits fifth in the ACC this year with 2.364 goals per game, and de Vries is averaging 1.2 of those. The secondary scoring problem, one that has plagued SU at times this season, was mitigated over the weekend by Sarah Luby’s first two goals of the season.
The Orange next play at home against No. 1 North Carolina (10-0, 3-0) — the top-ranked team for the past five weeks — Saturday at 1 p.m.
