After combining for 20 goals and 46.2% of Syracuse’s total points this season, freshman Charlotte de Vries and junior Carolin Hoffmann were named second- and third-team Longstreth/NFHCA All-Americans, respectively. It marks the 11th time in the last 12 seasons that the Orange (12-7, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) have had multiple players earn the national status in one year.
Leading the Orange in scoring with 15 goals, de Vries had 11 more goals than the next highest total. But, she was held scoreless over the final four games once opponents stuck extra defenders on her and forced Syracuse’s offense to operate off secondary scoring — something it struggled to do early in the season. The 15 goals are the second-most by a freshman in Syracuse history, trailing only Martu Locarinca’s 18 in 2008.
“It’s really impressive what she did in the beginning of the season,” Hoffmann said after Syracuse’s season-ending loss to Princeton on Nov. 15. “Within the season, though, opponents are getting stronger, so it’s just what she has to learn.”
Hoffmann also earned All-American status for the first time in her career after tallying five goals and 12 points. As a midfielder, the offense often circulated through Hoffmann en route to de Vries. Hoffman also served as one of the Orange’s primary shooters on penalty corners.
Hoffmann generated the team’s second-most shots on goal and was named ACC player of the week after scoring both goals in Syracuse’s 2-1 win over Louisville on Nov. 5 — one of three wins against top-5 opponents for SU.
The Orange’s 5-1 loss to the Tigers in the first round of the NCAA tournament marked the third-straight season Syracuse failed to advance past the opening stage. But it only graduates Claire Webb, Sarah Luby and Stephanie Harris, returning the bulk of minutes and offensive contributors for next season — including both Hoffmann and de Vries.
