After an 18-save performance against then-No. 9 Army last weekend, Drake Porter earned Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player of the week on Tuesday. The senior goalie helped No. 3 Syracuse (3-0) defeat the Black Knights, 9-7, for the Orange’s third-straight win to open the season.
It’s the second weekly award for SU this season, as Chase Scanlan won ACC offensive player after the Feb. 7 season-opener when he scored seven goals. Porter, who had 12 saves in the win, went on to stop 11 shots against Binghamton on Feb. 15.
He’s scooped up seven ground balls and caused two turnovers while allowing 8.70 goals per game — 13th-best in the country. Opponents have scored just 25 times on Porter, and his 13.7 saves per game rank 16th-best.
“We were also able to check sticks, and kind of pressure those guys into shooting quickly each time, which allowed me to make my read,” Porter said.
Syracuse faces No. 19 Hobart (3-0) on Friday, its last game in the Carrier Dome for the 2020 season.
