SU voted to finish 3rd in ACC, 4 Orange players earn preseason All-ACC honors

Syracuse ranked No. 3 in the preseason Atlantic Coast Conference coaches poll announced Tuesday. Boston College, who defeated SU in last year’s national championship, earned 76 votes and is projected to finish first in the conference, while defending ACC champion North Carolina ranked second. All three teams topped the Inside Lacrosse/Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse preseason poll in the same respective placements.
Four Orange players also earned preseason All-ACC team honors, tied for the most on any team with BC and UNC. Senior Meaghan Tyrrell was one of three attacks earning the honor alongside Tewaaraton winner Charlotte North (Boston College) and UNC’s Jamie Ortega.
Also, SU attack Emily Hawryschuk earned an at-large spot. Entering her sixth season, Hawryschuk has scored 197 goals and is 64 goals away from breaking head coach Kayla Treanor’s SU record for goals in a career with 260.
Meaghan led the Orange with 112 points and 68 goals last season, helping an SU attack that was without Hawryschuk for most of the season due to an ACL injury. Meaghan’s younger sister, Emma Tyrrell, was one of the four midfielders to earn preseason honors. Emma played in all 21 games for the Orange last year, scoring 42 goals and 43 draw controls, the third-most for SU.
On defense, Sarah Cooper was named as one of three defensemen earning preseason honors. Starting in all 21 games, the first team All-American led the Orange with 48 ground balls and caused 33 turnovers, the second-most for Syracuse. In December, USA Lacrosse Magazine named Cooper, Meaghan and Hawryschuk to its preseason All-American teams.
On Friday, SU hosts No. 13 Stanford in the Carrier Dome, its first matchup against the Cardinal in over 10 years. It will be the first game with Treanor as head coach, who is coming off a national championship victory as an assistant with Boston College. Friday will also be Hawryschuk’s first game since suffering the ACL injury last February.
