After an overtime 17-16 victory against then-No. 17 Notre Dame, Syracuse stayed at No. 3 in the Inside Lacrosse and Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. For the fourth consecutive week, Syracuse trails Atlantic Coast Conference rivals No. 1 Boston College and No. 2 North Carolina, which both hold a record of 5-0.
On Saturday, Syracuse entered the fourth quarter against the Fighting Irish with a 14-9 lead before ND came back to tie the game at 16-16 with under 20 seconds to go. The Orange conceded nine free-position goals and head coach Kayla Treanor said the free-position goals are what got ND back in the game.
In overtime, Treanor called a timeout a few seconds after Kate Mashewske won the opening draw control. On the ensuing possession, SU’s season-leading scorer Meaghan Tyrrell dodged through the right side of the 12-meter. She stopped, spun and dodged towards the center of the cage, slipping the ball past the Fighting Irish’s Bridget Deehan, securing the Orange’s first road and conference victory of the season.
Offensively, Emma Tyrrell led the Orange with seven points, the most of any player on either teams. Emma also secured a game-high nine draw controls. Emily Hawryschuk also notched four goals, her most since the 2021 season-opener against Loyola before she tore her ACL.
Syracuse continues the back-half of its two-game road trip in Evanston, Illinois, when it faces No. 6 Northwestern in a 2021 Final Four rematch. The Orange upset the Wildcats 21-13 and handed them their only loss on the season. Six SU players scored multiple goals, five of whom scored at least three, to send the Orange to their third-ever NCAA Championship.
