After two more wins in conference play, two Syracuse skaters earned College Hockey America honors. Sarah Thompson earned CHA forward of the week and Hannah Johnson won defenseman of the week thanks to their contributions in Syracuse’s series sweep over Lindenwood this weekend.
The Orange tied a season-high with four goals against Lindenwood on Friday. Thompson was involved in three of the four goals on the night, recording a career-high three assists, helping the Orange to its most lopsided victory of the year. The junior assisted Johnson’s opener, for Syracuse’s eighth power play goal of the season. Thompson then connected with Madison Primeau twice for her third and fourth assists on the year. Thompson was strong from the faceoff circle as well on Saturday, winning 13 out of her 19 draws. She also recorded her eighth block of the season in the 4-3 win.
Johnson scored both of Syracuse’s opening goals this weekend to put the Orange ahead, something they struggled with during nonconference play. On Friday, Johnson recorded three blocks, commanding a Syracuse backline that conceded just one goal.
On Saturday, Johnson was in the right place at the right time for her third goal of the season. After a wraparound move by Rhéa Hicks, a scramble ensued in front of the net with multiple players from each team attempting to gain control of the puck. Johnson snuck behind everyone as the puck squirted free, kicking it to her stick as she flipped it into the open net. The junior recorded a season-high five blocks to increase her season total to 26. Despite her 5-foot-3 frame, Johnson leads SU in blocks on the season, doubling the next closest player Mae Batherson, who has 13.
