Syracuse women’s lacrosse is now ranked No. 1 in the Inside Lacrosse Women and Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association rankings. It is the first time SU has achieved the feat this season, and just the second time in program history.

Over the last week, wins over No. 9 Loyola and No. 15 Duke have helped the Orange (9-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast) remain undefeated. Against the Greyhounds, Syracuse went scoreless in the third quarter before a four-goal effort in the final period clinched a 9-7 comeback victory. Megan Carney and Meaghan Tyrrell both notched two goals apiece. The victory was SU’s eighth straight win to start the season, and secured the best start in program history.

Against Duke, Carney led the way with a season-high five goals in a 16-10 Syracuse win. Up by just one goal at halftime, the Orange embarked on a 7-1 run in the penultimate quarter and featured eight different goal scorers.

After Week 5, and two consecutive weeks with the No. 2 ranking, No. 1 Syracuse received 19 first place votes and 593 total points, leapfrogging North Carolina. The Tar Heels had maintained the No. 1 ranking since the preseason, but now sit at No. 3 after their first loss of the season to Northwestern. The Wildcats haven’t lost since the season opener against Syracuse, and currently rank No. 2.

The Orange will return home to the JMA Wireless Dome on Wednesday, March 22 to take on No. 6 Stony Brook. The opening draw is set for 8 p.m.
