Florida Atlantic transfer quarterback Michael Johnson Jr. has committed to Syracuse football, according to 247 Sports. Johnson Jr. is the son of Syracuse co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Michael Johnson.

Johnson Jr. commits to Syracuse with two years of eligibility remaining. After spending the 2019 season at Penn State, he entered the transfer portal and took a year off in 2020. He then joined FAU during the 2021 season.

In 2022, he missed the season due to a shoulder injury. Johnson Jr. contributed in a variety of ways in 2023, serving on special teams as a gunner and returner at times while also appearing in red zone packages. In his redshirt junior season, Johnson Jr. rushed for 140 yards and seven touchdowns across 10 games.

Johnson Jr. joins Kyle McCord as the second quarterback to commit to Syracuse from the transfer portal since new head coach Fran Brown’s arrival. McCord committed on Dec. 17 and is the team’s definitive starter. The backup position was a spot that Syracuse needed to add depth to, as Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and Braden Davis are currently the only other two quarterbacks listed on the roster other than McCord.
