Water main break closes University Avenue, changes bus routes
University Place closed between College Place and South Crouse Avenue on Tuesday at about 9 a.m. due to a water main break, causing the Centro City buses and the Quad Shuttle to operate using Waverly Avenue instead of University Place.
Repairs to the water main were completed by 2 p.m., an hour earlier than expected, and the buses returned to their normal routes, according to a Syracuse University News Alert.
Debbie Somers, Syracuse Department of Water commissioner, said one of the water mains had a crack, which led to a minor break. It was fixed using a wrap-around, she said.
Scott Vanderopool, of Parking and Transit Services, said he was unsure of how the break occurred but that his supervisor alerted him of the problem. A construction worker confirmed to Vanderpool that the main had been broken. He said his job was to alert the students of the bus route changes via Twitter, News Services and the Parking and Transit Services website.
The Department of Public Safety received no dispatches or calls concerning the water main break, said Jennifer Horvath, public information officer for DPS.
Students can subscribe to Twitter messaging from Parking and Transit Services to get immediate updates on changing road conditions, which is especially helpful in the winter, Vanderpool said.
