Water main break on Waverly Avenue causes disruptions

UPDATED: Dec. 9, 2010, 4:28 p.m.

A water main break that closed a portion of Waverly Avenue was cleared at about 11 a.m. and bus detours for the area are no longer in effect, said Scot Vanderpool, manager of Syracuse University Parking and Transit Services.

The break between South Crouse and University Avenues occurred before 7 a.m., Vanderpool said. Students were informed of the break via an SU News Alert e-mail sent at 7:24 a.m. The City of Syracuse found and cleared the water main break, Al Sauer, director of Parking and Transit said. He received notice about the break at 6:55 a.m.

The break affected the Connective Corridor bus route, which normally turns right down Waverly Avenue, he said. It also turned off the water to the Newhouse Complex and to Health Services at 111 Waverly Ave. Physical Plant hung up signs informing of the water main break, Breese said. Water was turned back on around 9:30 a.m.

It is unclear how the water main break occurred, but it is believed to be related to problems with a valve, said Alan Breese, director of Physical Plant, SU’s facilities maintenance services.

‘There’s no way to really determine how a water main break that’s below the surface happens,’ Breese said.
