Eric Dungey left Saturday's game against Central Michigan in the second quarter after being hit near his head by defensive lineman Mitch Stanitzek.

Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said he’s spoken to Central Michigan head coach John Bonamego about the targeting penalty that injured quarterback Eric Dungey, and said SU has “moved beyond it.”

Chippewas defensive lineman Mitch Stanitzek told the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun that he wanted to apologize to Dungey after the helmet-to-helmet contact with him on Saturday sidelined SU’s quarterback for the second half and likely the game on Saturday against No. 8 Louisiana State (2-0, 2-0 Southeastern).

Stanitzek was ejected from the game, a 30-27 in overtime win for the Orange (3-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast).

And while Shafer didn’t say whether he had heard from Stanitzek or not, the conversation with Bonamego after the game and the subsequent text he sent the day after put the situation to rest.

“I really appreciated that,” Shafer said. “He’s a first class guy … We’re focused in on LSU.”
