Syracuse blows lead in 4-3 loss to UConn
Syracuse (1-3) dropped its match against Connecticut (1-1) on Saturday 4-3 after failing to hold onto a lead multiple times throughout the game.
The Orange came out quickly against the Huskies, as Nicole Ferrara’s goal put SU up 1-0 just 23 seconds into the game.
Eight and a half minutes later, Nicole Renault scored an unassisted goal, giving the Orange a 2-0 lead. But the Huskies responded by scoring two goals within a span of 16 seconds — one of them on a power play — and tied up the score at two.
Syracuse retook the lead 13 minutes into the second period with Melissa Piacentini. The period ended with the Orange leading 3-2.
SU didn’t score for the rest of the game, but the Huskies did. A Connecticut goal 14 minutes into the third period tied the score at three. The deciding goal came three minutes later, as the Huskies took a 4-3 lead they would hold onto the rest of the way.
Freshman Maddi Welch made her collegiate debut in goal and ended the game with 15 saves.
The Orange plays its next game Sunday at 2 p.m. against Providence.
