CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia poured onto the field as Oliver Vigille helped Zaire Franklin up from the turf in the end zone. Cavaliers swarmed around the Syracuse linebackers, having just run in the game-winning touchdown in triple overtime.

Cole Murphy slowly walked toward the locker room, shaking hands with UVA players on the way. Eric Dungey threw for two touchdowns in overtime, one to Ervin Philips and one to Steve Ishamel, but a 48-yard field goal from Murphy in the third extra period that fell short gave Virginia one last chance it capitalized on.

Syracuse (3-3, 1-1, Atlantic Coast) fell to Virginia (2-4, 1-1), 44-38, in triple overtime at Scott Stadium on Saturday for its third consecutive loss.

In regulation, an SU offense defined by its big-play ability in the first couple weeks, and highlighted by the likes of Brisly Estime and Ishmael, was instead relying on Dungey and hybrids Philips and Ben Lewis to create in chunks. The freshman quarterback ran for 85 yards and passed for 150 more, never hitting a receiver deep downfield but rather scrambling on his own or dumping the ball off.

After UVA strung together an 18-play scoring drive – starting from its own 4-yard line – that sent the game to an extra period, Dungey found Philips from 7 yards out on the right side in the first overtime. After Virginia scored, he found Ishmael on the first play of SU’s drive in second overtime — Ishmael keeping one foot inbounds — after the Cavaliers scored to put the Orange on the ropes.

But as the ball fluttered short of the bottom goal post, the second 48-yard attempt Murphy missed on the day, Virginia marched from the 25-yard line to the end zone, putting a dagger in arguably SU’s most winnable game remaining on its schedule.
