No. 1 Syracuse finishes regular season undefeated with OT win over No. 4 Duke

No. 1 Syracuse (16-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast) defeated No. 4 Duke (11-5, 2-4), 1-0, in overtime Saturday afternoon to finish the regular season undefeated. Alma Fenne scored her 13th goal of the season in the 79th minute of play to end the game after nearly nine minutes of extra play.

Syracuse outshot the Blue Devils, 16-9, though both teams earned four penalty corners. Syracuse dominated possession in the first half as it has so many times over the season, shooting eight times while holding Duke without a shot in the first half.

After forcing the Orange to overtime, Duke had an opportunity to finish the game with two shots off of two different penalty corners. The first shot off the first ran wide of the net and the second was stopped by Syracuse back Roos Weers.

After Weers made the defensive save, Fenne netted the game-winning goal a little over five minutes later. After goalkeeper Lauren Blazing left the net, Fenne found the cage from about 6 yards out.

With a perfect regular season wrapped up, Syracuse next plays in the ACC tournament which begins Thursday, Nov. 5. As the top team in the conference, SU earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of the No. 4-seed Virginia and No. 5-seed Duke the following day.
