‘Beer and Wine Appreciation’ professor’s top picks

In some semesters, FST 422: “Beer and Wine Appreciation” and FST 412: “Wine Appreciation” fill up in the first 20 minutes of registration. Now, the man who teaches these popular classes is retiring. Before he goes, though, Tim Barr shared with Pulp his top six wines and beers.
Wine
Pinot Noir
This is a classification of red wine known for it’s lighter color and rich taste. According to International Pinot Noir Celebration’s website, the wine generally has a light to medium body and is reminiscent of raspberries, plums or black cherries.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Another classification of red wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is fuller-bodied than Pinot Noir but maintains the dark fruit taste. The fruits typically identified with Cabernet Sauvignon are black cherry, black currant and blackberry, according WineFolly.com
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is a white wine that is related to the Cabernet Sauvignon. According to WineFolly.com, this kind of wine can taste like a wide range of fruits, including lime, green apple, passion fruit and white peach. The lime flavor comes out with less-ripe grapes, while the peach flavor is prominent with very ripe grapes.
Beers
Lake Placid UBU Ale
This is what Lake Placid Pub and Brewery is known for. According to the brewery’s website, it is an “English-style Strong Ale” with a deep red color with fruit and malt flavors.
Saranac Pale Ale
The Pale Ale is one of Saranac Brewery’s classic beers. Saranac is a local brand, based out of Utica, New York. According to the website, it has “rich and fruity with a crisp hop finish.”
Bud Light Lime
Although it may surprise some to see a non-craft beer on this list, Barr said it was one of his favorites. The beer differentiates itself from regular Bud Light with a citrus twist, which comes from 100 percent natural lime flavor, according to Bud Light’s website.
