Virginia Tech (5-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) started giving its coach, Frank Beamer, retirement presents early. The 68-year-old coach with 278 wins announced his retirement last week and the Hokies beat Georgia Tech (3-7, 1-6) 23-21.

Wake Forest (3-7, 1-5) lost to No. 4 Notre Dame (9-1) 28-7 in South Bend, Indiana.

Sean Maguire started his run against Syracuse and continued rolling as he led No. 16 Florida State (8-2, 6-2) past North Carolina State (6-4, 2-4) 34-17.

No. 23 North Carolina (9-1, 6-0) won 59-21 over Miami (6-4, 3-3).

Pittsburgh (7-3, 5-1) rode Qadree Ollison’s 111 rushing yards to a 31-13 win over Duke (6-4, 3-3).

Louisville (6-4, 5-2) tacked 38 points on Virginia (3-7, 2-4) and allowed 31 as the Cardinals earned bowl eligibility with its sixth win of the season.

For just a moment on Saturday, college football mattered in Syracuse, New York, football beat writer Sam Blum wrote. That’s because Syracuse (3-7, 1-5) took the nation’s No. 1, Clemson (10-0, 7-0), into the fourth quarter down by just a touchdown. But in the end, the team couldn’t capitalize. Also, running back George Morris  made the most of his opportunities in the game.
