If you have a little time between cramming for your finals this weekend, try out one of Pulp’s weekend plans. This week, they include an a cappella concert and a Fiesta de Navidad. Click on the orange text to learn more.

 

Great Russian Nutcracker

The Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker comes to the Oncenter this Sunday. The group has been touring this show in North America since 1993, when it first stopped in Syracuse, according to its website. Lush sets, detailed costumes and highly-skilled dancers have made the tour so successful that it now puts on 100 performances annually. Tickets run from $28 to $102 and the showings on Sunday are at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

 

After Hours

Six campus a cappella groups will take the stage on Thursday for the biggest A Cappella Council concert of the year. Otto Tunes, The Mandarins, Orange Appeal, Main Squeeze, Groovestand and Oy Cappella will all perform together for the only joint concert of the semester. The show doesn’t start until 9 p.m., which is later than most a cappella concerts and gives it the name After Hours. Tickets for the show are free and available at the Schine Box Office.

 

Fiesta de Navidad

The La Casita Cultural Center and Near Westside Initiative have partnered to put on a Christmas party at La Casita this year. Fiesta de Navidad will feature live performances and a traditional Caribbean holiday dinner. Among the performers are Raices, a campus dance group, and a Bomba and Plena performance by Pleneros D’ Borikén. The center is located at 109 Otisco St. and return transportation back to campus will be provided for students.

 

Clinton Square Ice Rink

In the winter you can skate in Clinton Square, which is where Citrus in the City takes place during freshman orientation. It is located in the heart of the city and was once a main stop on the Erie Canal. Plus, it is within walking distance of Armory Square, if you want to take a break from tottering on skates. The rink is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $3 and photo identification is suggested. Remember, the rink is only open if the weather conditions are right, so call 315-423-0129 to check before you go.

 

“I Will Be”

On Thursday, the film fraternity Delta Kappa Alpha will be screening its first film production, “”I WILL BE: An Introduction to the Effects of Youth Violence on a Split Community.” The fraternity partnered with the Syracuse Youth Development Council and the Residence Hall Association to create the documentary, which is about the violence that plagues the youth in Syracuse. A gallery of art and poetry created by Syracuse children will accompany the screening, as will a panel that will discuss themes from the movie.
