Trendy outfits inspired by Oscar nominated films

The movies nominated for Academy Awards can more than just inspire you to do great things — they can inspire some fashionable outfits as well.

For the past few years, the Oscars have faced its fair share of controversy — and for good reason. Although there were some undeniably deserving winners this year, you can’t have the Oscars without a couple of snubs. But have no fear, your unsung favorites haven’t been forgotten. In fact, they can be immortalized with just a little help from your wardrobe:

“Brooklyn”

Set in the 1950s, “Brooklyn” depicts the famous New York City borough as a far cry from the hipster haven we know it to be today. Style it with the oldies by donning your favorite midi or tea-length skirt — chiffon isn’t a must, but an A-line most certainly is. Tuck a light and simple blouse underneath to get the perfect ’50s silhouette. A high-neck crop top would be another great pairing.

For a little extra warmth, throw over a cropped cardigan to channel the decade’s classic feminine flare. To give your outfit a more modern update, wear some statement wingtips or oxfords (these are Doc Martens) with a lace-trimmed sock from Topshop. As a finishing touch, add some cat-eye sunglasses for a simple sprinkle of glam whether you’re heading to class or a more formal occasion. Oh, and a little red lipstick never hurt anybody.

“Straight Outta Compton”

Undoubtedly the biggest snub on the list, “Straight Outta Compton” is an edgy flick that had us yearning for the style of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Luckily, it isn’t hard to copy the iconic style of the late, great N.W.A. For starters, wear a logo t-shirt underneath a black varsity jacket or bomber. As for bottoms, a black or grey pair of jeans, joggers or track pants are perfect to capture a chill yet unmistakably badass aesthetic.

Lastly, you couldn’t embody the style of any ’90s rapper without a logo-emblazoned snapback. If you want to add a more colorful touch to this look, try wearing a brightly-colored tee or hat, or match the two to give off a unique vibe.

“Joy”

“Joy” is a feminist film for the ages, with a main character whose perseverance and strength are only complemented by her revolutionarily sleek style. Let’s not forget that this film was set in the times of Dynasty. To get this sophisticated monochrome look, style a black button-down with a pair of black jeans or slacks. Throw on a leather jacket (or blazer if you want to go full ’80s), some aviators and booties, and you’ll give J-Law a run for her money.

Accessorizing isn’t at all necessary for this look. However, if all-black everything just isn’t doing it for you anymore, add a statement necklace. If you’re feeling daring, maybe try the outfit in all white.

“Steve Jobs”

You can’t pay homage to “Steve Jobs” (or a film about him) without acknowledging his classic uniform. Wear a black turtleneck and some white sneaks and a pair of high-waisted light wash jeans: a mom or a skinny cut will do just fine. Matching black or white socks, if visible, are another necessity to channel the tech icon.

To add your own personal twist on the look, dress it up with a variety of accessories. Statement or regular jewelry, a belt, a cap or a jacket could definitely take it up a notch without ruining the classic style that Jobs was so fond of. No promises that this outfit will help you invent the next iPhone, but with just the right personal touch, it might leave you feeling inspired.
