No. 3 Syracuse (7-3, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) lost the third of its last five games, falling to No. 16 Boston College (6-3, 1-2), 13-8, Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Boston College started the scoring attack early, as Sarah Mannelly scored just 56 seconds into the game after winning the opening draw. But Riley Donahue responded just under three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.
That sequence foreshadowed the rest of the first half. The Eagles would score to go up by one, and the Orange would respond shortly thereafter. Throughout the half, it never took Syracuse longer than 3:39 to respond to an Eagle goal. The half ended with BC up, 6-5, after Tess Chandler scored with 3:01 left in the half.
But SU ran out of answers in the second half. Mannelly scored to open up the half again and Nicole Levy scored to make it a 7-6 game. That was the last time the Orange would be within one. Over the next 14 minutes, the Eagles went on a 6-1 run, highlighted by two more Mannelly goals, to open up a 13-7 lead. Emily Resnick scored with 6:50 left, but it was too little, too late.
In its the weakest performance of the year, the Orange tallied just two assists to match a season-low. It’s the first time this year that Syracuse never held a lead, and it’s also the first time that an opponent won more draws than SU did.
Syracuse will look to rebound when it takes on No. 5 Notre Dame (9-1, 3-1) in South Bend, Indiana, next Saturday at noon.
