Senior fashion design major Taryn Multack has waited four years to show off her fashion creations. She’ll get that chance tonight when Schine Student Center’s Goldstein Auditorium is transformed into Fashion Week and 45 senior fashion design students reveal their six-piece collections.
‘It’s such a cool experience. I can’t tell you how much hard work we put into it. We’ve been preparing for this since the first day of freshman year,’ Multack said.
Gorgeous clothes, loud music and leggy models will take the runway for the annual senior fashion show, which students like Multack have been anticipating since they arrived at Syracuse University.
The designers are anxious about their collections and the models are concerned that certain body parts might pop out, but fashion design professors Todd Conover and Jeffrey Mayer seem anything but worried. They’re excited to show everyone what they’ve been working on all semester long.
‘There’s a lot of energy and creativity. The diversity of what you’re going to see is incredible – from casual sportswear to incredible evening wear to avant-garde,’ said Mayer.
Early in the semester, an open model call attracted more than 300 hopefuls. In the end, only 120 models were chosen. Each senior fashion designer is assigned six models, but each model can walk in four or five shows, each of which has a different theme.
Multack’s collection is based on the Salem witch trials.
‘It’s pretty gothic and kind of witchy. It’s more of a theatrical experience. There’s a lot of texture, raw edges and some lace,’ Multack said. ‘The color palette is more black, some reds, pewter and gold – it’s more muted, but with a modern flare.’
Stephanie Latocha’s, was inspired by jellyfish. Her couture gowns move with the models and the iridescent fabrics produce unique colors underneath the lights.
‘When I picked fabrics, I wanted ones that would move with the air – that’s why they’re all so flowy,’ Latocha said. The designer spent four all-nighters on a beautiful iridescent coral gown.
Conover said that in addition to showing off their pieces tonight, 10 designers will also show to an audience of 400 in New York City on June 3. A panel of seven jurors, including School of Design faculty members Lucinda Havenhand and MaryEllen Letterman and buyers from Edge and Jet Black, will be at Thursday’s show to hand-select the lucky designers.
Students can still buy tickets at the Schine Box Office for Thursday, April 23 at 12:30 p.m. or Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. Balcony tickets are $10 for students with SU ID and floor seating is $25 for general admission.
‘It’s great entertainment and it’s wonderful to see live. You can see it on YouTube and Style.com, but it’s completely different live. To see the movement of the pieces, the models and to be with a group of people who are seeing it for the first time – it’s great,’ Mayer said.
