A boil water order has been put into effect because E. coli bacteria were found in the water supply Thursday morning. This order affects the southeast area of Syracuse, which includes Syracuse University, according to an Onondaga County Health Department news release.

If E. coli bacteria are found, it usually indicates that there is human or animal waste contaminating the water, the news release stated.

The City of Syracuse received a report Thursday morning that the presence of E. coli was found in water samples, the Health Department news release stated.

The Health Department asks that residents of the southeastern area boil water for at least a minute before using it for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or any food preparations. This order is in effect until further notice, according to the news release.

The City of Syracuse and the Onondaga County Health Department are working together to ‘identify and correct the problem,’ the news release stated.
