Syracuse senior slot receiver Ervin Philips, who set a Syracuse and conference record with 17 catches Saturday, was named Atlantic Coast Conference Receiver of the Week. He had a career-high 188 yards in SU’s 33-25 loss at North Carolina State.

His 17 catches were the most by any FBS player in a game this season. The outburst marked Philips’ third career 100-yard receiving game. He is second on SU’s all-time receptions list in 38 career games. Against the Wolfpack, Philips found space mostly over the middle of the field because he was guarded mostly by a linebacker.

“When I see a linebacker on me anytime,” Philips said, “I love it.”

Philips ranks third in the country in receptions per game, with 8.8, behind only Hawaii’s John Ursua (9.3 catches per game) and fellow SU receiver Steve Ishmael (10.2).

Syracuse junior quarterback Eric Dungey finished with 385 yards passing against the Wolfpack, which moved into the AP Top 25 at No. 24 this week. Dungey completed 28 passes to Philips over the previous two games, including 11 for 93 yards and a touchdown last week at then-No. 25 LSU. Over the first three games of the season, Philips had only 16 combined catches for 139 yards. He surpassed his total through SU’s first three games of 2017 on Saturday alone.

“I just want to stay consistent,” Philips said. “I know I’m capable of performances like this.”

North Carolina State senior defensive end Bradley Chubb, who spearheaded an NCSU defense that held SU to 59 rushing yards, was named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week. He had eight tackles, including six solo and 3.5 tackles for 24 in negative yards. He sacked Dungey twice and was credited with a pair of QB hurries.

Last week, SU senior linebacker Parris Bennett was named ACC Linebacker of the Week for his 12-tackle effort at LSU.

Syracuse (2-3, 0-1 Atlantic Coast) plays next against Pittsburgh (2-3, 0-1) on Saturday at 12:30.
