Syracuse’s distance prowess was on full display at the Iowa State Classic on Friday. Justyn Knight added to his Bowerman Award resume and Paige Stoner broke her own school record in the 5K, becoming the first woman in school history to record a sub-16 minute time in the event during the indoor season.

In Ames, Iowa, Knight finished first in the 5,000-meter event with a 13:39:59 time, the fastest mark in the NCAA. Knight now has the time to beat in the 5,000-meter, 3,000-meter, and the third best time in the mile, according to Cuse.com.

Stoner earned silver in the women’s 5K with a time of 15:44:04, erasing her own school record by 20 seconds. Although she crossed a second behind Georgia’s Jessica Drop, her time is good for fifth-fastest in the nation.

Junior Iliass Aouani and senior Philo Germano also ran the men’s 5,000-meter race, finishing in 17th and 22nd place respectively.

In the men’s 3,000-meter, which ended after 9:00 p.m., sophomore Aidan Tooker earned 10^th place with a 7:56:57 time, his personal best.

Earlier in the day, in the 400-meter dash in Boston at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, junior Kadejhia Sellers edged past the competition, taking home the gold with a 53.24 time. She finished just past Columbia’s Akua Obeng-Akrofi, who crossed 0.24 seconds later. Syracuse’s Cheyenne Trigg also competed in the event, finishing 18th and clocking in at 56.33 among collegiate and professional sprinters.

Sprinter Dasia Pressley also shined in Boston, earning a podium finish with a 23.88 time in the women’s 200-meter race, just shy of her personal best 23.66 which she ran in last year’s Valentine Invitational. She came in third place, first among collegiate runners.

The women’s 4×400 group, which broke the school record in the event last week, finished second behind Penn’s quad. Danielle Delgado, Alexis Harper, Tia Thevenin and Sellers recorded a blazing 3:43:97 time, less than a second behind the Quakers.

On Saturday, the men will continue to compete at the BU Valentine Invitational. Sam Somera is entered in the men’s 800-meter race and Noah Affolder, Nathan Henderson and Andy Paladino will run the mile. Additionally, SU has five runners, highlighted by Joe Dragon and Kevin James, competing in the men’s 3,000-meter.
