After coming off a three-game homestand, No. 43 Syracuse (7-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) defeated Brown (5-4), 6-1, to pick up its first road win of the season at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The lone loss on the day came from Dina Hegab.
The Orange took advantage early by taking the doubles point behind two 6-0 victories: No. 19 Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez made light work of Brown’s Juliana Simon and Taylor Cosme while SU’s Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun beat Alyza Benotto and Semi Oloko.
To start off singles, Ramirez added to the Orange’s lead early by only giving up one game to Brown’s Maddie Stearns en route to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at second singles.
No. 18 Knutson gave up the first set, 2-6, to Benotto, but rallied behind a second-set tiebreaker and a dominant third set to win 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 at first singles. Similarly, Shkudun fell behind early in a 4-6 first set loss to Simon, but came back in fourth singles to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
In the third singles slot, Golubovskaya beat Cosme, 7-6 (4), 6-4, while Mesh gave SU its sixth point of the day behind a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 forfeit from Katie Ta.
Hegab, who was undefeated this season before Saturday’s matchup, fell to Courtney Kowalsky in the fifth spot, 3-6, 2-6, to hand Brown its only point of the day.
Syracuse will look to match its win total from last season (eight) when the Orange takes on Harvard (4-6) on Sunday in Cambridge.
