Student sent to hospital after inhaling chemicals during lab

Emergency crews responded to Bowne Hall Tuesday at around 1 p.m. after a Syracuse University student accidentally inhaled chemicals during a chemistry lab, said Syracuse District Fire Chief David Reeves.

The unidentified male student opened a jar of chemicals and became sick after inhaling the vapors, Reeves said.

Emergency crews were called, and after the student was removed from the building into fresh air he recovered quickly, Reeves said. The student was taken to Crouse Hospital as a precaution.

Several fire trucks and ambulances blocked traffic on Sims Drive behind Bowne Hall for about an hour following the incident.

Firefighters entered the building to check the status of the lab and make sure the students inside were safe.

Portions of Bowne Hall were closed as the firefighters inspected the lab.

‘We’re treating this as a chemical incident and taking every precaution,’ Reeves said.
