Range Rover crashes into Mount Olympus steps

At about 2 a.m. on Friday, the Syracuse Department of Public Safety responded to a car accident at the top of the Mount Olympus stairway.

The driver, a Syracuse University student, drove a Range Rover off Mount Olympus Drive and into the upper overhang of the Mount Olympus stairs, said Jen Horvath, Public Information officer at DPS. The student was not injured.

The Syracuse Police Department and SU Ambulance were called to the scene, Horvath said. SPD issued the student four traffic tickets for vehicle and traffic violations, including aggravated driving while intoxicated and failure to use the designated lane, she said. The student was then released.

SPD is handling the investigation, she said.

The Mount Olympus stairway was blocked off by the Ground Department, Horvath said, and it will be unavailable for use until it is repaired and deemed safe. She said she is still waiting to hear back from the Grounds Department about how long that will take.

Horvath said as an alternate route, pedestrians can use the stairs further down Mount Olympus Drive, by the Women’s Building tennis courts.
