Tajon Buchanan was selected ninth overall in the MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution on Friday afternoon.

After moving away from his mother in Canada, not playing a competitive soccer match for a year and paying to attend a Syracuse training camp to get noticed, Buchanan developed into a star for the Orange.

Buchanan was selected to the to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team after tallying career highs in points (20), goals (eight) and assists (four) in 2018. He was the first SU player since 2015 to record 20 points in a season.

After a quick scoring start, Buchanan suffered a left knee sprain before he returned in Syracuse’s Sept. 24 matchup with Colgate and played with a knee brace. Buchanan went on to score SU’s 34th hat trick in program history in a Syracuse’s 7-0 blowout of St. Bonaventure.

The Orange rode the success of their star sophomore to a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament but were knocked out by eventual national semifinalist Akron.

Buchanan is the 11th SU draft pick since 2014-15, and the eighth first-rounder. In the last two seasons, Mo Adams and Miles Robinson were both Generation Adidas signees and were selected in the top 10. Two other members of Syracuse’s 2018 roster — center back Kamal Miller and midfielder Hugo Delhommelle — are 2018 draft hopefuls.
