No. 43 Gabriela Knutson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week after upsetting No. 3 Kate Fahey of Michigan on Saturday. Knutson is the first Syracuse (4-0) tennis player to win the award this year, and it’s the fourth of her career.
Knutson was instrumental in the Orange’s upset of No. 9 Michigan in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. She beat Fahey in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, and paired with Miranda Ramirez in doubles to win, 6-3.
The following day, she struggled against Purdue. Knutson won her first singles set, but couldn’t close out the match, falling 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Again paired with Ramirez, she dropped her doubles match, 7-5. The Orange still came out on top, 4-3, to book a place in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship next month.
The preseason singles No. 5 dropped to No. 43 during a tough fall season. She went 5-4 in singles and 5-6 in doubles. Syracuse is back in action on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Drumlins Country Club to kick off ACC play against Virginia. Knutson will likely take on No. 32 Meghan Kelley in singles.
