Syracuse rises in rankings, Gabriela Knutson earns ACC Player of the Week

Despite dropping both of its matches last week, Syracuse (12-11, 5-9 Atlantic Coast) rose from No. 31 to No. 30 in the latest ITA rankings released on Tuesday. The Orange lost to then-No. 4 Duke and Clemson 6-1 and 4-3, respectively.
Gabriela Knutson rose in the singles rankings for the fourth-consecutive week, moving from No. 19 to No. 13. SU’s top singles player won both her matches last week, defeating the Blue Devils’ then-No. 13 Maria Mateas 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) and Clemson’s then-No. 82 Marie Leduc 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). The wins gave Knutson four in her last six matches.
Also on Tuesday afternoon, Knutson was named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Miranda Ramirez moved from No. 100 to No. 97 in singles, while she and Knutson stayed put at No. 56 in the doubles rankings. Ramirez lost in straight sets against Duke before she bounced back and won in two sets on Sunday.
After returning to the doubles rankings last week, Sofya Golubovskaya and Sonya Treshcheva climbed from No. 90 to No. 84.
Syracuse opens this week’s ACC tournament in Cary, North Carolina, against No. 38 Georgia Tech (12-11, 7-7) on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. It’s the second consecutive season that the Orange face the Yellow Jackets in the conference tournament. It lost 4-2 in the quarterfinals last season, with Knutson picking up the lone singles wins for SU.
