Violent crime near campus
Former Syracuse University student Brian T. Shaw was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child on February 10. On April 3, Shaw was sentenced to 21 years in prison, ending The People of the State of New York v. Brian T. Shaw.
The jury found Shaw responsible for the murder of Chiarra Seals, the mother of his 4-year-old daughter, Essence. Seals was killed on the evening of March 23, 2005.
The Hon. Joseph E. Fahey presided over the trial, which lasted 10 days. Witnesses included detectives and police officers that investigated the crime scenes and questioned Shaw the night of Seals’ death, Shaw’s roommates and Shaw.
