SU considers expanding multicultural learning communities

Expanding multicultural learning communities at SU was one of #NotAgainSU’s 19 demands.

Syracuse University is considering an expansion of its multicultural learning communities, the university announced Thursday.

The Office of Learning Communities is seeking student feedback on expanding its Multicultural Living Learning Community, currently open to freshmen, according to an SU News release. Members of SU learning communities live together on residence hall floors based on common interests.

#NotAgainSU, a black student-led movement, called for the expansion of multicultural learning communities in its list of 19 demands presented to Chancellor Kent Syverud in November. The movement formed after racist graffiti targeting black and Asian people was found on two floors of Day Hall.

Syverud agreed to work with students to further develop SU’s multicultural learning communities in response to the movement’s demands.

Students can provide feedback on the possible expansion through an online survey, which closes Monday. Room 114 of Bird Library will also offer drop-in hours Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The feedback will provide the Office of Living Learning Communities with important input as they prepare to expand, according to the release.

The multicultural learning community focuses on social justice and positive citizenship through multicultural education and community engagement. Members are required to attend a weekly seminar and enroll in LAS 300, “Living in a Diverse Society,” intended to help undergraduate students explore their ethnic backgrounds and create alliances across cultures.
