A day after its first ranked win of the season, Syracuse (3-0) rose two spots to No. 3 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Maverik Media Poll released Monday morning. Three losses by teams in the top 5 last week — Penn State, Virginia and Maryland — moved the Orange’s ranking for the first time this year.
Jamie Trimboli’s career-high five goals and Drake Porter’s career-high 18 saves lifted Syracuse over then-No. 9 Army, 9-7, despite just two first-half goals. All of the Orange’s tallies came courtesy of midfielders, as a starting attack that notched 14 goals through an opening pair of games was held scoreless. Porter and Army goalie Wyatt Schupler combined for 34 saves in the fifth game SU won while scoring nine or fewer goals since 2017.
North Carolina and Notre Dame rounded out the media poll’s top 5, Virginia dropped to No. 6 and Duke was the lowest-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team at No. 13. After two losses last week, including the one to Syracuse on Sunday, Army dropped to No. 16.
Syracuse next plays Friday against No. 19 Hobart (3-0), when the Statesmen come to the Carrier Dome at 7 p.m. for the annual Kraus-Simmons Trophy. Hobart has won the trophy just three times since the annual game started back in 1986, but its undefeated start this year propelled it nine spots and into the rankings.
