Following a close 12-11 victory over No. 4 Stony Brook, Syracuse remained at No. 3 in the weekly Inside Lacrosse and Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association poll. The Orange stayed behind conference rivals No. 1 Boston College and No. 2 North Carolina for the third consecutive week after both teams won this weekend. Despite the loss, Stony Brook stayed at No. 4.
On Sunday, Stony Brook missed its last opportunity to tie the game on a woman-up opportunity with just under a minute to play. After Sierra Cockerille received her second yellow card, the Seawolves couldn’t capitalize. Tessa Queri secured the ground ball after Natalie Smith defended the Stony Brook attacker’s dodge. Syracuse cleared and escaped with the 12-11 win despite a scoreless fourth quarter and leading by three goals multiple times in the game.
Meaghan Tyrrell led the Orange offensively again, scoring a team-high four goals and bringing her total to 15 on the year. Meaghan Tyrrell opened her scoring in the afternoon after receiving a pass from her younger sister Emma Tyrrell, who dodged a defender just inside the 12-meter fan and found Meaghan Tyrrell outside the cage for an easy finish to equalize the game at one.
Megan Carney notched three goals and four assists, including assisting two of Meaghan Tyrrell’s goals. Carney, who is recovering from an ACL tear, has eight total scores, the second most for SU. This weekend, Syracuse opens both road and conference play at No. 17 Notre Dame, who’s dropped 12 spots since the preseason poll after losses to then-No. 11 Michigan and then-unranked Vanderbilt.
