With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Syracuse trailed 4-3 to Boston. After tallying a goal earlier in the game, defenseman Rachel Teslak charged up the ice once again.

Teslak took the puck from the Syracuse defensive zone all the way to the Terriers’ zone. Skating up the left flank, Teslak cut to her forehand and fired a shot through the five-hole of BU goalie Mari Pietersen.

Teslak’s goal evened the game at four a piece. After leading 2-0 five minutes into the contest, Syracuse allowed three consecutive goals. The Orange (3-4-1, 0-0 College Hockey Association) bounced back in the third period and ended in a 4-4 tie with the Terriers (0-2-1, 0-2 Hockey East Association).

Despite the tie, Boston dominated offensively, outshooting Syracuse 73-30. Although they were outshot, the Orange started strong. Following a 7-0 loss just 72 hours ago, the Orange got out to a quick start in Boston. Just 30 seconds into Friday’s game, Syracuse got the puck deep in the Terriers zone.

Tatum White carried the puck behind the net, eventually coming out to the front from the right side. She dished the puck across the net. On the left side of the net, Darci Johal sat waiting for the puck. Johal stuffed the puck past Pietersen, putting Syracuse up 1-0.

Three-and-a-half minutes later, Syracuse doubled its lead. White was the catalyst yet again as she carried the puck up the ice. Streaking down the left flank, she passed the puck around the net out to the right point.

At the right point, Teslak took a one-timer slapshot that beat Pieterson. Teslak would add another to tie the game in the third period. Teslak has continued her strong performances after winning College Hockey America defenseman of the week last week.

The game ended in a tie after the five minute overtime period expired. However, the teams played out a shootout that did not count towards the result of the game. In the shootout, Teslak also recorded the winning goal, although it did not count towards the outcome.

Despite two early strikes by SU, the Terriers controlled the majority of the game.

BU answered with a goal of its own ten minutes into the first period. Following the first 20 minutes, SU held a 2-1 lead but was lacking behind in most statistical categories, getting outshot 27-7.

Syracuse’s penalty kill allowed it to stay in the game. Despite committing six penalties and committing a foul which resulted in a penalty shot, the unit stayed strong, allowing no goals. On the powerplay, Syracuse capitalized on one of its three chances with a goal from Kate Holmes in the third period.

Following the early 2-0 Syracuse lead, the Terriers mounted three consecutive goals. Two of the goals came in a dominant second period.

In the second frame, Boston scored the tying and leading goal. With 2:20 left in the second period, Brooke Disher collected a loose puck just before it went out of the Syracuse zone. Skating to her left, Disher shielded the puck with her body away from the defender as she closed in on the goal.

After passing Sarah Thompson, Disher whipped a left handed wrist shot over the glove of goalie Allie Kelley.

Following Disher’s goal in the final minutes of the second period, BU had much of the momentum entering the final frame of regulation. Despite the struggle in the second, Syracuse’s third period performance kept it in the game.

A back and forth goal barrage decided the fate of the game in the final 20 minutes of regulation with SU ultimately doing just enough to force overtime.

The Terriers entered the period leading by one, but four minutes in Syracuse would even the score.

On the power play, White tipped the puck from behind the net to the left to Johal. Johal dished it out to the point where Holmes fired a wrist shot that deflected off a BU defender into the net. White set a screen in front of the goalie, making it difficult for Pietersen to see the puck. The SU captain finished the game with three assists.

Just 23 seconds after the game-tying goal Boston would retake the lead. Syracuse answered back once again five minutes later to even the game.

In the overtime period, both teams were reduced to a 3-on-3 in order to attempt to end the game. SU and BU both quickly lost energy in the five minute period and failed to get many threatening chances. As time expired, the game would end in a 4-4 tie.
