Penney re-breaks Syracuse record in 1500-meter run at Virginia Challenge

While many Syracuse runners struggled at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday, Lauren Penney continued to re-write the Orange’s track and field history books.

The graduate student broke her own school record in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:13.87, eclipsing her previous mark (4:16.08), which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19.

Along with Penney, Brianna Nerud, Molly Malone and Brenna Symoniak also competed in the 1500-meter run, finishing in 20th, 24th and 34th respectively.

In the women’s 5000-meter race, freshman Margo Malone finished 10th in 16:41.65,  Alexandra Clinton came in 23rd (17:24.30) and Meredith Speakman’s 25th (17:42.33).

Max Straneva’s took fifth-place finish in the men’s 5000 meters (14:20.43) and Joseph Whelan (9:03.85) and M.J. Erb’s (9:07.40)  took seventh- and eighth-place, respectively in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Robert Molke was 11th with a time of 30:28.28 in the 10,000-meter race.
