Syracuse earns four All-American nods from USILA
JoJo Marasco leads Syracuse’s group of four players earning All-American recognition from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association on Thursday.
The first-team pick, Marasco, is joined by defender Brian Megill, midfielder Luke Cometti and midfielder Henry Schoonmaker. Megill earned second-team honors while Cometti and Schoonmaker were named honorable mentions.
Megill was a second-team All-American last season and Marasco was an honorable mention in 2011.
Marasco averages a little more than one goal and two assists per game, leading the Orange offense with 58 points on the season. His 38 assists this year set Syracuse’s single-season record for a midfielder.
Marasco is a Tewaaraton Award finalist, too.
Cometti, Marasco’s first midfield linemate, is the team’s joint leading scorer with attack Derek Maltz. Each player has 30 goals. Cometti dominates off the ball, slipping into catch-and-shoot spaces around the crease.
Schoonmaker leads SU’s second midfield line, often drawing the same defender as Marasco does on the first line. The pacy midfielder has 23 points from five assists and 18 goals, nearly all of which he’s scored with his jump shot.
Megill, who captains the team alongside Marasco, has won 48 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers this year. He holds the Orange’s all-time record for career turnovers with 100.
Syracuse takes on Denver at 5 p.m. Saturday in the final four at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
