Syracuse snags Vanderbilt transfer Morrison

Former Vanderbilt guard Maggie Morrison joined the Syracuse women’s basketball team Tuesday, SU Athletics announced in a press release.

Morrison is eligible for the 2014-15 season and will have two years of eligibility. A 5-foot-8 distributor, Morrison ranked eighth in the Southeastern Conference in assists her freshman season before missing the final 23 games due to a knee injury.

Her productivity dwindled her sophomore season, as she played 13 games and scored two points and dished out eight assists in 62 total minutes.

“Maggie is a very versatile guard that can play multiple positions in our system,” Syracuse head coach Quentin Hillsman said in the release. “Her skill set is complete and will help us become a more complete team.”

In the 10 games she played during her freshman season, Morrison ranked sixth in the SEC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6). She also nailed 40 percent of her 3-pointers and chipped in 2.9 rebounds per game.

During her senior season of high school, Morrison carried Archbishop Spalding to a 27-2 record and played in the ESPN Rise National High School Invitational. Originally from Millersville, Md., Morrison will likely share minutes at point guard with rising sophomore Cornelia Fondren in 2014 when current Orange guard Rachel Coffey graduates.

She was ranked the 49th-best guard of 2011 by ESPN HoopGurlz and was dubbed the Baltimore Sun’s Player of the Year in 2011.

“I am so excited to be here and looking forward to contributing to the program,” Morrison said in the release. “The coaches and team have been very welcoming and helpful in the transition. I am ready to work hard on and off the court for my new ‘Cuse family.”
