Connecticut running back Philips commits to Syracuse

Connecticut running back Ervin Philips verbally committed to Syracuse on Sunday, he announced via Twitter.

Phillips, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound speedster from West Haven (Conn.) High School, becomes SU’s latest addition to the Class of 2014. He joins Lamar Dawson, K.J. Williams, Jason Cabinda, Parris Bennett, Rodney Williams, Corey Cooper, Colton Moskal, Zaire Franklin, A.J. Long and Naesean Howard.

Neither Scout.com or Rivals.com has a positional, national or state ranking for Phillips, who has flown under the radar for the entirety of his recruiting process.

The Connecticut native was hoping for an offer from the University of Connecticut. UConn did not grant his wish. Aside from SU, Phillips’ only other offer came from Temple, according to Scout and Rivals.

Philips becomes the second running back to commit to Syracuse for 2014, joining Howard. Howard’s 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame is very similar to Philips’, and both backs will be in constant competition to get snaps on a team with numerous talented runners.
