UPDATED: May 25, 2011, 6:40 p.m.
Syracuse wide receiver Jarrod West was arrested by Bethlehem, Pa., police in the early morning hours Friday and will be cited for underage drinking, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
West was arrested along with two other men, including Pittsburgh backup quarterback Anthony Gonzalez. The other two men were both charged with marijuana possession, according to the article.
Through the SU athletic department, Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone issued a statement.
‘We are aware of the situation involving Jarrod,’ Marrone said. ‘We will continue to handle the matter privately.’
There has been no word as to whether or not West will be disciplined by Syracuse.
Gonzalez was suspended indefinitely from Pittsburgh’s football team Tuesday night for an undisclosed violation of team rules, according to the Tribune-Review. All three men arrested, including West, are 19-years old.
Coming off of a strong spring, West, a redshirt freshman, had potential to be a playmaker on the field for Syracuse this fall. The 6-foot-2 wideout played well throughout the spring and finished spring practice as a second-string receiver on the depth chart, behind starters Marcus Sales and Van Chew. West redshirted a season ago after breaking his foot in preseason camp.
