Draw specialist Kailah Kempney prepares to face Maryland's Taylor Cummings

Kailah Kempney has been the sole person on the draw for Syracuse this year and her 9.83 draw controls per game rank third in the country. Maryland faceoff specialist Taylor Cummings, the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner, will test Kempney’s success when No. 5 Syracuse takes on the No. 1 Terrapins on Saturday at noon in a rematch of last year’s national championship game. Goalkeeper Cariddi reflects on 1st start, making Syracuse roster

Amanda Cariddi spent her first two years at Syracuse on the club ice hockey team, and joined SU’s Division I team midway through last season. She’s held a backup role since then, but made her first career start on Saturday, posting 23 saves and conceding just one goal. Hockey had always been a part of her life, but she gave up the dream of playing NCAA hockey — only to eventually wind up on a Division I team. Read more »

Niang thrives as undersized guard at D-II Simon Fraser after transfer from community college

After a fruitless high school career and a small stature led to no college interest, Sango Niang attended Chaffey (California) Community College and joined the basketball team. After two years at Chaffey, Niang transferred to Simon Fraser University to play D-II basketball. He’s now tied for 12th in the nation with 22.7 points per game and with one game to go in his senior season, is just 38 points shy of the 1,000-point mark. Read more »

Gilligan continues to protect net as regular season ends after seizing starting role for Orange

Jenn Gilligan started to worry about her body about halfway through this season. Feeling sore and fatigued, the Syracuse goalie had played in all but one of SU’s games and was second in the country in minutes played. But when the team took its month-long break from games in December and two-week long break from practice, Gilligan took the time to rejuvenate. Read more »
